In BJJ, the grades range from White to Blue to Purple to Brown to Black. While some styles of martial art require 2 years of training in order to obtain the rank of black belt and mastery of the basics, BJJ requires 2 years of instruction to earn the blue belt and mastery of the fundamentals. This means that an BJJ Black Belt will have spent more than 10 years perfecting their technique. Each belt colour is a major achievement in and of itself.

BJJ is a grappling-based sport. It doesn’t start on the ground, but that’s where most of the fight occurs. BJJ is great because it doesn’t rely on strength or size to submit your opponent. Along with its use of chokes and holds, this makes it very effective for street fighting.
